We live in an area with a lot of pecan trees and some people use the crushed shell mulch to quite effectively mulch, create weed free paths and borders in their gardens. The shells of pecans, walnuts and some other nuts if laid down thick enough will inhibit weed growth. We have 13 pecan trees of our own, and I can attest to the fact that the broken shells that do not get picked up by the harvester do not break down very fast once they get broken by squirrels, dogs, people and mowers. You might see if there is any kind of nut shelter in your area. Since shells are a waste product, they shouldn’t be very expensive to purchase in bulk.
