I have found that in addition to growing grain feed ( I found planting pigeon feed the best. Try to find non GMO feeds) that earthworms in vermicure beds called "Windrows" are the very best chicken feed there is ( besides live mice living under boards. You'd think chickens are part hawk they way they all chase down a mouse!) Between the windrow worm growing beds, I plant pigeon feed along the borders and row crops for human veggies in the centers of my "Food Forever" Regenag farms. We use "Cissel netting" poly netting used in upland game bird farms to cover the FF projects. It's not too much work to install 3 of four sides, then flip them over to incorporate a new field every year for chicken delight.

After the windrows are well established and full of adult earthworms, the chickens are allowed in to forage. Then when they start to run out out of insects, they begin to nip the shoots of the people crops. That's when they are moved into the next paddock, rinse and repeat. The windrows are in turn where we plant the crops for human consumption the next season.
