There are Mycorrhizal Fungi and then there are Soil Fungi in general. Try not to confuse one with the other. AB mycorhhiza(e) refers to an OBLIGATE symbiosis between a host root (angiosperm) and a mycorrhizal fungus. Obigate means that the mycorrhizal fungi cannot reproduce in the absence of a host root. As such, if you throw 100 AB spres into compost tea and bubble till the second coming of Christ, you will have <100 AB spores at the end. That is the nature of Obigate Symbioses. Who knows, maybe some day we will find the key to circumvent 465 million years of evolution.
