Newer stairlifts have improved a bit most modern models include battery backup that runs several trips during outages, not just once or twice. For space, some newer designs have slimmer rails and folding footrests/arms that reduce how much stair width they take, though they’ll never disappear completely. A few families switch to wall-mounted handrails, better lighting, or stair tread upgrades first to delay lifts. When we researched options, companies like Stair Ride Company explained layout tradeoffs honestly (not affiliated). Unfortunately, stair width and safety physics still limit how compact lifts can be.
