Hi there, I'm Travis. I'm 42 and have a 100 acre homestead in Southern West Virgina.
About me - I was fortunate enough in life to retire early. I have the ability to devote 100% of my time to this dream ranch that I'm building and not have to worry about juggling employment. I try to live debt free and only have my mortgage to deal with. I've been single for a few years, the only woman in my life has been a doberman 😅 I am kind of a closet nerd. I've been a master beekeeper for a decade now and am also an Extra Class amateur radio operator. I make mead and brandy from my honey, the rest is used as a sugar substitute when cooking. I also harvest propolis, pollen, and beeswax. I don't follow sports but do enjoy going to watch games in person. Not a big TV watcher. I enjoy non fiction/documentary style books and movies. I'm very easy going and patient for the most part. I am a member of a Mennonite Church in Pennsylvania. I'm not a Bible beater by any stretch of the imagination but coming back to the church has brought me a lot of clarity and direction at this point in my life. I definitely haven't lived a conventional life by any stretch of the imagination. I've traveled a lot, did the van life thing before it was a fad because I was broke as hell when I was younger, lived half the year in my camper for the past few years just travelling the states and visiting far away friends, proud SD resident for the tax savings haha. I've section hiked most of the Appalachian Trail, thru hikers the John Muir Trail, and many places in SE Alaska. I bought a small camper back in 2020 then converted it to be totally off-grid. It was good small scale practice for what I am about to build in WV. I get my dental work done in Colombia because a round-trip ticket to MedellÃn is cheaper than getting work done here. I don't have insurance and don't qualify for anything from the govt. Idk, my life is kinda ridiculous to most people and I wouldn't believe half of my stories if I didn't live them.
About the property -It's kind of a blank canvas as it was someone's hobby farm/sandbox for the last 20yrs. It was previously a homestead for several families from the mid 1800s until the early 2000s. It was 3 separate homestead plots but now is one massive property so I own the entire road, my own personal holler. There's about 25 acres of pasture land with the potential for several more once some clearing is done. There are a few outbuildings that need minimal work to get into shape for livestock/general farm use. Sadly, the original homestead house has been left in a state of disrepair/animals took it over for a few decades and needs to be demolished. There are miles of old logging and mule team trails for hiking or atv'ing that also connect to a vacant wooded 1500acre tract owned by a timber investment company. A creek originates on the property fed by numerous year round springs, I seen bunches of baby crayfish and minnows in there this week. There is a 3-4 acre pond that is currently dry and needs some drainage work before it can be filled and stocked with fish again. There's a decent size livestock pond there too but I'm unsure what to do with it. I just got power ran to the property. I now have StarLink and long range WiFi repeaters in place to provide Internet and Wi-Fi calling on most of the property (no cell service). It's definitely a diamond in the rough and going to take 2 or 3 years to get it back to it's former homesteading glory.
About the dream I'm working towards - I am in the process of selling my house in Pennsylvania so I can pay cash for my 40x60 Shop/House red iron build. 40x40 shop with a 20x40 two story living quarters. I've collected all the solar I need so I can eventually cancel the electric service from the utility company. I have free natural gas for life because of an on-site natural gas well...meaning the in floor radiant heat, gas dryer, furnace, water heater, backup generator, stove/ovens, and whatever else will all run for free. Starlink and the land mortgage will be the only bills for the entire property once the solar is operational. I want to fence in the pasture land for regenerative ranching. I want the livestock plan to be in place for sustenance in the next two years. Once the bugs are worked out then I can scale up the livestock numbers to turn a small profit on top of paying for my own unlimited supply of meat. That's more of a 5 year plan though. I am installing a hoop house for year-round produce as well as raised beds. Definitely going to get the huge pond back into shape and stock it with many varieties of edible fish. Livestock list includes Dexter/Hereford cow for dairy and meat, Dorper lamb for meat, pasture pigs for land clearing, pond repair, and also meat, egg laying and meat chickens. All livestock will be rotated on pasture in a regenerative manner. I am going to hard fence the entire pasture perimeter and use portable fence to move the livestock into different paddocks every few days. Gonna be applying for every grant possible from the USDA to get some reimbursement for some of these projects. Idk, I could go on and on about this haha
What I'm looking for in a partner...Someone who is also easy going and patient. I keep everything in my life low drag and drama free. Life is too short to nit pick and argue all the time. Looking for someone who has a similar dream and would be dedicated to a true partnership in life and also building this ranch. If you have a remote job or some kind of residual income, great. If not, it isn't really a problem but know that there is no work in this area. I can provide for two people but we definitely won't be keeping up with the Jones' 😅 If you picture yourself living a slower paced life and just wanna make cheese and stuff then get in touch. Haha
