Mine like shade. In the heat of the summer they seemed very stressed but did better when I added some shade. They also like a lot of water. Don't let their feet get dry.
It's difficult to tell from the pictures, but it looks like a sycamore to me. Does the bark get lighter as you look up the tree? Maybe even some white patches up high in the branches?

They have many varieties that are listed in the various Food Forest books- Edible Forest Gardens/ Gaia's Garden. I planted almost one or two of everything in their catalog and had 100% success this year! They are a little further south (Tennessee) but may be the same zone as you or at least close to yours.
