Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop:
Join us as we host John Holzwart (‘Little John’) for a comprehensive presentation explaining several approaches to grafting, followed by a demonstration and hands-on learning. Participants graft and take home two semi-dwarf fruit trees of your choice (apple, pear or plum). Root stocks and scionwood (fruit tree cuttings) provided. Additional plant materials will be available to purchase for grafting more trees at home. Bring a sharp, clean pocket knife or similar; some knives available for your use during class. Limited space; register early. *This class is followed by a free scionwood exchange. See additional details below*
Cost for Grafting Workshop: $40 until 3/5, $45 after.

Free Scionwood Exchange:
Stick around after the workshop for a free scionwood exchange and fun time trading fruit tree cuttings! Newbies and seasoned grafters will mingle and swap scionwood of various fruit trees. All we ask is that you bring a few labelled cuttings of dormant scionwood; no patented varieties please. If you are bringing scionwood to trade or give away, please be ready to supply a botanical name and description of the fruit.

Hey Everyone,

For those who are interested in our courses, we're holding two, two day courses coming up at the end of this month and the 2nd weekend in February. If you would be so kind as to let your friends know and/or post it anywhere online that might attract interested people, it would be REALLY appreciated. Scroll down to find out more and feel free to call at 715-779-0155 or email if you have any questions about us, the quality of our courses, or how to get here. We are a land based community and practicing permaculturalists. We do not teach to make our living and that's why we keep our courses affordable.

Courses in Sustainable Living

Hosted by The Draw,
a land based regenerative community on the Bayfield Peninsula

Permaculture 1.

Permaculture is the conscious design of landscapes which mimic the patterns and
relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fiber and energy for the
provision of local needs. In this two day workshop we will cover ethics, principles and design
methodology of permaculture to create a sustainable now. We won’t spend any time on
rehashing negatives but will focus on grounding people in a paradigm of sanity and
empowerment. The workshop will be held at our farm that has been designed utilizing the ethics,
principles and design methodology of permaculture. We will explore our design and see first
hand how all the systems operate. The workshop will end with groups creating and presenting a
permaculture design for a specific site.

When: January 26- 27 Saturday and Sunday
Cost: $75 or one day work trade*

Permaculture 2.

In this two day workshop we will delve deeply into the permaculture agenda exploring
two connected topics; systems thinking and ecological agriculture. We will begin by exploring
a new way of knowing that is holistic and biological. One way to describe permaculture is
landscape design based in systems thinking. It is just about the opposite of how most of us were
trained to think. How we think is so deeply ingrained in us that most of us don’t ever realize
there are alternative ways of knowing. The limits to the dominant way of knowing in our
culture, namely reductionism, is becoming increasingly evident as human and ecological systems
continue to degrade. Thinking in systems is the foundation upon which regenerative ecological
and social solutions can be implemented. We will relate this new way of knowing to agriculture,
politics and communication to come up with a pattern language for a regenerative society.
We will finish with an in depth look at ecological agriculture. Topics will include; forest
gardening, aquaculture, integration of systems, animals large and small, ecology, Gaia, natural
history, indigenous land management techniques, implementation strategies and more. We will
look at agriculture with a systems perspective and see how we can design our farms and gardens
in the image of an ecosystem.
We hope people will leave the course with a better understanding of the framework of
their thought (assumptions) and an understanding of a new way of knowing that will empower
them to look at old problems with new lenses and come up with holistic solutions that instead of
creating more problems solve them.

When: February 9th and 10th Saturday and Sunday
Cost: 75$ or one day worktrade*

*We will select specific days in spring and summer. If either of the dates do not work for someone we can
specifically arrange a day with them. Work could prove to be educational and fun!

-Lunch and dinner will be provided, as an option, on both days for all courses. Five dollars is asked for
each meal.

I'm currently an intern at The Draw and truly value the people here and the
work they put into transitioning their lives to lives of abundance. I chose to
take on the job of advertising since they rarely use the internet. The Draw is
working on a unique site and scale being that it's 280 acres of mostly secondary
succession poplar forest in the upland with the Raspberry river (runs into lake
Michagan) as a lowland with a ton of large balsam, cedar, black ash, maple,
and hemlock in the in-tact river bottom. They don't have 30 year old forest
garden examples like the bullocks out on Orcas Island in Washington, but they
have 6 year old forest gardens, tons of knowledge, and they're doing everything
you can read about when it comes to permaculture (One of the coolest things
that they're working on in my opinion is transitioning their secondary succession
poplar dominated forests into climax forests of chestnuts and walnuts. If you're
going to take a permaculture course, I can promise that this one has a lot more
to offer than concepts imbedded within a short three day course.

Sincerely,

Adrian

In this ten day workshop we will delve deeply into the system of permaculture
design.
We hope you will leave the course saturated with a new way of knowing which
empowers students to look at old problems with new lenses to create holistic
solutions.

We will begin by exploring a new way of knowing that is holistic and biological.
One way to describe permaculture is land-use design based in systems thinking.
Thinking systems is basically the opposite of how we are trained to think, and
how we think becomes so deeply ingrained that most of us don't ever realize
there are alternative ways of knowing. Limits to the dominant way of knowing in
our culture, reductionism, are becoming increasingly evident as human and
ecological systems continue to degrade. Thinking in systems is the foundation
upon which regenerative ecological and social solutions can be implemented. We
will relate this new way of knowing to agriculture, evolution, ecology, natural
history, water, social organization, natural building, epistemology and more to
come up with a pattern language for a regenerative culture.

A permaculture way of knowing cannot be built on top of our current
unsustainable way of knowing. Simple lineal accumulation of knowledge is not
sufficient. Radical reorganization of life-ways is necessary if we are going to
create a regenerative culture—a permaculture. We must step back, question our
assumptions, and ground ourselves in a paradigm of sanity and empowerment.

Join us for this 10 day immersion course in a permaculture inspired land-based
community. You will learn from a functioning permaculture site as well as
several regional practicing permaculturists. Lecture and discussion will be
bolstered by daily hands on activities. Three local organic meals daily, on
site camping, and materials will be included. This design course is intended
for hands on practitioners and is priced to be affordable; certificates
available from Clare Hintz for those whose management goals include
certification.

When: -Friday July 13th-Sunday July 22nd
Where: -Bayfield Peninsula, WI.
Pricing: -Honor-system sliding-scale $450-$900.

Our internship program is a great way to enmesh yourself into the community and participate in diverse projects. We are looking for self motivated people eager to learn. Interns eat all meals with the community sharing the cooking and cleaning responsibilities. Essentially it is their home for as long as they are here. The community expects the individual to put at least four days of work a week in on the land. Two of those days will be dictated by the community (generally a group project). The other two days will be self-directed on the condition that the community supports the enterprise. Possible projects are endless. We have had people interested in compost tea, mushroom cultivation, charcoal production for a carbon sink and terra preta, earthen plasters, building woodworking tools such as a shavehorse and a kick lathe and forest gardening. It is also perfectly acceptable for the intern to work with community members on their projects throughout their stay.

Priorities for 2011 include; plant propagation (grafting and cuttings), intensive grazing of milk cows, horses and sheep, erecting fences for the livestock, planting - lots of planting, evolution of our aquaculture system, fluffing past plantings, annual gardening, perhaps an earth oven and all sorts of other interesting things that come up. We feel like internships of this kind are the best way to become grounded in real life skills and a holistic/systems epistemology. Think of it as the new age university without the debt.

The worktrader is expected to pay for half the cost of consumables (food, toilet paper est.) with the community covering the other half. We eat all organic and mostly off the land. We as a community will attempt to facilitate the worktrader in their passions. We hope to create an environment of creativity and productivity.

Please go to thedraw.org for further information and our location. We are looking for committed individuals or couples only.
