Thanks for the feedback, very helpful. I too am interested in bio-char application as well. I find the unique conditions that exist in the humid tropics to be both challenging and exciting but it seems a large majority of the information I encounter is focused on more temperate environments. Having said this, I am encouraged to find many who appear to have years of experience in permaculture application in the tropics and I am hoping to reach out to them for guidance and mentoring as we move forward. With that said, I was wondering if Fred Morgan would mind if I pm some questions from time to time as we move forward here in Peru? Pleas let me know Fred if you would be open to this. Thanks again to all for your supportive comments.

Does anyone have any experience with hugelkulture in the tropics? I am looking for land in the Peruvian amazon and we don't have the kinds of problems with temperature and rainfall that exist in temperate climes (obviously). That said, I really like the concept and the long-term fertility of hugelbeds and I am just wondering if there are any unforeseen drawbacks to using this method in a humid tropical environment.

I am in the Peruvian amazon and we are working on projects as well. PM me if you would like to brainstorm. There are some great people working on small permaculture/agroforestry/conservation farming type stuff, but it is still small and no real network yet. I, for one would love to help change that! Let's talk.

I am currently in the Peruvian Amazon. I will be beginning a project in the next year between Tarapoto and Yurimaguas. We would love to open up the experience to volunteers once we are up and running. In the meantime you could try contacting our friends at Eco-Ola (eco-ola.com). They have a great project up and running over three years now and they take on volunteers often. PM me if you want to stay in contact.

GOOD LUCK!

Mike
I too am heading to the tropics, the Peruvian amazon to be exact, to start a sustainable agroforestry project. I am interested in networking with others in the same boat. If you plan to do something similar or are already working the land in a tropical area of the world, please make contact and let's help each other out. One group I will be working with in Peru is Eco Ola at eco-ola.com. They have been at it about three years now and are doing wonderful stuff. If anyone has any new resources or ideas, let me know and I will share our experiences as we go.
