Found a place today that sells broad bran...is that any good?
I use white flour as well as the eggs cling to it better than the oats and I can sift it through the strainer but bran would be better...

That sound good. What size and how many trays do you use? And how often do you have to replace the beetles ?

I have a few questions. A lot of my pupae died although I removed the hatched beetles straight away so they wouldn't feed on the pupae.
Why did they die? I lost roughly 20%.
The beetles seem fine now but how do you separate the eggs from the beetles? I tried a sieve but don't think many eggs fell through as they cling to the bedding.
No luck with bran, I am looking to get some delivered from an online shop but postage to the scottish highlands is very expensive...
Any other hints to make this project successful ?

Hay stacks will not work at all in our climate. It is far too windy up here, we struggle to keep the roof on our sheds and have to bolt our trampolines etc. to the ground, otherwise they go flying. A haystack wouldn't last a week....

Katy is right. Sheep are easier to contain, don't kill your trees and don't even need a man made shelter. As long as they can get out the wind / sun (depending on your climate) they are happy. They will also maintain your grazing better as they aren't as picky as goats.
And of course you will get milk, probably more than from a dwarf goat.

Goats are browsers and prefer rough stuff. Mowed grass is very short. Goats prefer flower heads, grass gone to seed etc.
First cuttings vary depending when they are cut. Not sure why goats shouldn't have it but it may be because it will be very rich and the goats get fat...

That's an interesting project, surely somebody must be able to add their thoughts?
I have something similar in mind and was wondering the same thing. I was also wondering if a smaller diameter pipe rather than the usual 100mm would mean we could use more of it in length. O would it hinder the burn (less draft?) of the RMH ?

I'll ask around for the bran but I am not hopeful. I can't even get grit for the hens up here, have to order it from down south. 6GBP for the grit and 18GBP for delivery Thankfully I only need one bag every 2-3 years....
I keep ball pythons (have done for 25 years with a few years gap after my oldest died at 20+ years old but recently got hooked again) and planning to breed later this year for the first time.
The mealies are more for a treat but if it goes well I might keep more breeders back and increase production to save feed cost for the chickens and rats/mice(ASF). Currently waiting for several hundred pupae to turn to beetles....

I have a corrugated metal roof in my animal house I need to insulate. Weight is an issue so I was looking into those spray foam kits but the toxins do concern me. What is this soya spray foam? Do you have a link so I can see if it's available in the UK ?
The roof is pretty large (80sqm) and those kits only seem to cover 15sqm or 20sqm, which would make it really expensive.
Are there other options?
I had thought about putting chicken wire over the battens and stuffing straw tightly into the space but I don't know if that would be effective enough to stop condensation. Any thoughts?
