"Life Changer!" That is what we often hear from the folks that come through our 12 day, weekend based Permaculture Design Course. This high value course transforms people into ecological citizens and provides them with the tools to change the world regardless of where they are now or the field of work that they are in. After this course, everyone is empowered to be a part of the solution and apply these principles in their daily lives, places of work, or businesses. Our graduates are the next generation of sustainability experts!

This weekend based PDC begins in May and is quickly filling up. To find out more information about San Diego's longest running PDC check out the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute's site http://sdsustainable.org/event/permaculture-design-course-spring-2014/

Our course graduates leave this certificate program transformed and empowered! Many of them now teach, design, install, and consult on projects throughout the world. Our graduates have gone on to start backyard gardens, school gardens and waste reduction systems, community gardens and neighborhood education centers, permaculture demonstration sites, consulting businesses, landscape design and installation businesses, farms, CSAs, and many other green businesses. They are changing the world and you can too! This certificate course provides the tools, knowledge, inspiration, and framework to participate in developing positive environmental, social, and profitable solutions. If you are thinking about a career change or ways that you can incorporate regenerative practices into your existing job or business, the Permaculture Design Course can help guide you there.

    Announcing the Great Greywater Challenge
    1 Year. 365 Days. 365 Greywater Systems

Inspiring San Diegans to install over 365 greywater systems in 2013. When you wash your clothes, do you know where that water goes? Rather than letting this abundant resource go “down the drain” you can tap into it to sustainably irrigate your fruit trees and other landscape plants, getting your clothes (and your conscience) clean at the same time! A family of 4 people can save over 16,000 gallons of water a year by using laundry water to irrigate their landscape. If 365 households set up a simple, cheap, permit free, and legal greywater system we can save the region over 5 millions gallons of water a year! Come join the challenge, together we can create a water abundant San Diego.

The San Diego Sustainable Living Institute presents:
    Straw Bale Building Workshop
    Registration is done here

Join us for a weekend hands-on workshop in straw bale building. Straw bale buildings have been around for over 100 years and have proven to be a versatile and ecological building material. Building with straw bales has many advantages over traditional stick frame construction:
  • Energy Efficient- means less heating or cooling is needed
Sound Proof- thicker walls absorb and block sound
Fire Proof- three time the fire resistance of conventional homes
Environmentally Friendly- straw grows rapidly faster than wood and is usually treated as a waste product by the farming industry.

  • This workshop is the perfect introduction in learning how to build a small structure with straw bales. Participants will learn how to build an accessory structure without a building permit by keeping the footprint under a certain square-footage. This is perfect for those wishing to add a shed, art studio, office, chicken coop, or any other small outbuilding. Over the course of the weekend, participants will:
  • Learn how to build a simple foundation
    Stack, cut, and trim bales
    Allow for doors and windows
    Plaster a straw bale wall
Learn many other tricks of the trade

  • The building will be a post and beam structure with straw bale infill using all recycled and reclaimed materials. Once complete it will house a composting toilet.
This workshop is held in Spring Valley at Valley View Farm and the address will be sent out to registered participants. This workshop is taught by Don Axe who has over 20 years of experience in building beautiful homes including dozens of straw bale homes.
