I realize there are a good number of obstacles to overcome with this idea, and that's why I'm posting it here. Give me any constructive feedback you come up with, problems and solutions alike.

I first had this idea because of the smell my trusty kerosene heater produces. I know I'll never completely eliminate the kerosene smell, but I hope that I can cut it down enough that folks don't choke on it if they're not used to it. I understand there are products out there to cover the scent, but the scent is caused by an inefficient burn which makes me wonder if I can't possibly get more heat out of my heater as well as cut the smell.

I'm considering losing the Mass and just having a rocket heater. Since the kerosene heater doesn't require an outside vent I'm not losing any heat up the chimney, so the only benefit I see to the mass portion is that it gives a slower more even release of the heat into the room.

Possible issues that I've come up with are that the wick will not be able to keep up with the rocket effect and I'll just end up burning up the wick when it runs out of fuel. I think I'll also need a relatively small CSA because the heat source isn't a strong hot wood fire. I've also considered that I'll need to shield the fuel tank on the heater to keep it from overheating.

I'm sure I had other things to add, but I can't remember what they were right this minute. Let me know what ideas you have. Certainly let me know if you think of a safety hazard.

This might be too big for most designs, if the drum is close to the wall, so I suggest the alternative of semi shelves.
They could also be fixed to the wall instead of the drum.

Anyway, this would hide enough to make it more esthetic.

If you're good with metal-working they could be as decorative as they would be functional, and depending on how you mount them to the wall they could be easily removed for maintenance.

Just a thought but would the drum put off too much heat to wrap it with shelves? I hammered out a real basic drawing(having issues with a few settings in CAD or it would be nicer) just to show what I mean.
