Hi All,

Lola here, I am a resident artist, natural builder and educator living on a 75 acre Permaculture Education Center in North West Thailand. I will be running a week long natural building and earth art course each month on the following dates:

June 24 – 30 2013
July 17 – 22 2013
August – No Course
September 2 – 7 2013
October 21 – 27 2013
November 23 – 29 2013

The course fee is 4,800 Thai Baht (approx $155) this includes all food, transport to and from the farm, bedding and mosquito nets, then you can choose you accommodation which ranges from staying in your own tent - $1 a night to staying in one of our teak bungalows - $7 per night, which we hope will suit everyone's budget.

Earth Art – one week intensive natural building and beautification course

This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience in natural building techniques with the added bonus of letting your creativity and imagination run wild as you create art from the earth. This one week unique course will cover a variety of building methods including cob, wattle and daub, adobe bricks, lime plaster and render, earthen plasters, natural pigments and sculpting. After learning what makes a good building material and covering the history, traditions and techniques in the classroom the majority of your time will be spent working outside putting theory into practice. Using all of your senses you will come to understand what an amazing material earth is to work with. You will create, build, get very messy and explore different natural building techniques adding you own artistic flair. The goal of the course is not only passing on the skills to make you a confident natural builder but to also collaborate together in designing and creating a piece of art made from the earth and all of the goodies in our recycling center too. This could take on many forms, from standing sculptures, to functional objects, murals to mosaics the possibilities are endless. You will be inspired and amazed at what beautiful things can be created from earth and so called waste.


The course will be held in the beautiful surroundings of our 75 acre farm only 3 hours from Bangkok in Issan, Thailand and taught by myself, Lola. I have spent over 8 years creating sculptures from earth, I am a Fine Art graduate and a qualified college art teacher. I first combined my love of sculpture and natural building back in 2009, since then i have worked on projects in the UK and Asia ranging from Timber round house builds to super adobe furniture, 40ft mandala gardens to conventional walls. I love what I do and I am truly passionate about passing on the things I have learned, bringing people together and making steps to a more self reliant future.
Rak Tamachat farm has been in the process of conversion from a traditional Thai rice and corn farm to a farm that implements the principles of permaculture since Jan 2012. We are proud of the changes we have made and the journey we have been on. We strive to grow our own food, manage our waste effectively and mimic the systems that are already present in nature so as to leave less negative impact on the planet. Whilst living on the farm you will become a part of our international community, living, sharing and working together. We balance work and fun to maintain a happy functioning farm life.

This aquaculture course will be a complete overview of what fish can be grown and raised in rivers, ponds, and dams in Thailand. Rak Tamachat Education Center is in phase one development of its aquaculture program with a nursery pond and a tilapia grow-out pond. We have recently dug a canal that is attached to our multipurpose rice fields. The intent is to develop and implement dynamic, integrated systems that utilize animal waste to fertilize the aquatic plant life that becomes the primary food source for fish. All aspects of raising fish will be covered starting with the very basics of constructing ponds and dams, water quality assessment and mitigation, aquatic plants, fish biology, disease, nutritional requirements, homemade fish feeds, and more.

Pond Preparation, Construction, Considerations, and Management Tips
Pond Biology (Food Chains for Fish Production and Aquatic Plants)
Pond Chemistry (Water Quality and Remediation)
Fish Breeds and Species Selection
Stocking Density
Adding Fertilizer
Feeding and Nutritional Requirements
Maintenance (Cleaning and Inspecting Nets, Aeration, Fish Predation and Prevention)
Diseases: (including fish disease and human disease)
Effects on Environment caused by semi-intensive fish farming
Transporting Fish
Systems: Hapas & Floating Barrel Cages, Rice/Fish Cultivation, Chinampa Systems; Integrated Animal Systems- Duck Houses, Chicken Coops and Pig Pens; Duckweed Production, Cut-and-Carry Fish Fodders, Periphyton Production and Biodigester Residue.

The course will be held in the beautiful surroundings of our 75 acre farm only 3 hours from Bangkok in Issan, Thailand. The farm is in the process of conversion from a traditional Thai rice and corn farm to a farm that implements the principles of permaculture. We strive to grow our own food, manage our waste effectively and mimic the systems that are already present in nature so as to leave less of a negative impact on the planet. While living on the farm you will become a part of our international community. Living, sharing and working together we balance work and fun to maintain a happy functioning farm life.
