Just ran into this posting on Black Walnuts, Foraging for Black Walnuts has been my favourite Fall pastime over the last 70 years inspired by my father who couldn't stand to see all this lovely food going to waste. We would travel up and down the road collecting bags of the nuts, bring them home and have a stomping party in the barn on those lovely Fall evenings. We devised many alternative methods of de-hulling the nuts some very novel,  but I have found stomping in rubber boots the best method other that getting the ones along the road already husked by passing cars.
I have used that Hammer and stump method of cracking the nuts but the best I have found is a commercial tool

The Duke Black Walnut cracker.  This one is from a nut grower in Ontario Canada and I.m sure it is available other places.

I have built a couple of Warre hives and the instructions for the roof construction show the mouse guard or cover board attached to the sides of the roof above the quilt. I thought the roof was designed to allow air flow through the hive but having the mouse guard covering the quilt would seem to discourage that.
Does anyone have an explaination of this arrangement? Has anyone made modifications to allow more air flow? Thanks
