I decided to make a small promotion for all the permies over here.

So I am offering the forum members here a discount code to get 25% off on your order, just use the coupon code "permies" when checking out.

This offer is valid until the 31st of May 2015.

VacuCork Homepage

Hey guys!
I wanted to introduce you guys to these rubber corks (I've started calling them VacuCorks, Vacuum Cork) that have traditionally been used in Finland in order to preserve fruit juices and other liquids.
One day I was on the facebook group "Midwest Homesteading and Permaculture" and asked the members if anything like this existed in the states and apparently it did not. So I decided to do something about that and created a little online store for people in North America to have access to these corks.
So these corks fit 750ml/1l standard glass bottles and is applied on the bottle when the bottles have been sterilized and are hot and a hot liquid such as fruit juice is put in to the bottle. Once the liquid and bottle cool down it pulls the rubber cork down and creates a vacuum in the bottle. This way you can preserve your juices in a cool and dark place for more than a year. ( I have had some 2 year old black currant juice that my grandfather made and it still tasted delicious!)
So I am selling these for $8 per package and one package contains 10pcs, I also have a $10 flat shipping fee. Do note that it does take a 2-3 weeks for the corks to arrive because I am still in Finland, so sending them does take a while.
Also to mention is that these are reusable and really durable. I have some of my grandfathers old corks which are most likely from the 70's and they still do the job, so this is a very long term product that would enable you to preserve fruit juices from season to season.

Thanks for reading this message!

This is a small instructional video on how to use them:

I think a lot of people over here listen to Jack's "The Survival Podcast", but in case someone missed it he had an excellent podcast about automation with Eric Escobar. Eric speaks about how you can automate several things on your homestead such as feeding animals and opening/closing the door to the chicken coop. This is done with these small $40 computers called Raspberry Pi's. Anyways, this was a podcast that I first thought that I would not find interesting at all but it was super interesting and beneficial.

Listen up!

So I went to my colony garden today and all of the stems of the Jerusalem artichokes had been cut about 4 inches of the ground and there was a lot of rabbit/hare poop around the box.
Thought this was interesting and could be a good way to cut feeding costs with rabbits since the Jerusalem artichokes are perennial and grow like weeds.

I went to our summer cabin here in Finland and decided to film and show the outhouse. This is the standard outhouse system here in Finland.

It's a very simple and easy design, let me know if you guys have any questions about it

Washing with just plain water is the best way to wash yourself at the toilet in my experience and I would say that it is a sustainable way. (unless you have a very limited water supply). Around 0.5l is plenty to get yourself cleaned up, and trust me it is a lot more comfortable than TP.

Some of the transplanted tomatoes have started to develop flowers and the tomatoes grown from seed are around 10cm (4 inches) tall. Still a long way to go but there is still 3 months left of the growing season so plenty of time for the seedlings to produce. It has been two months since I planted the seeds so they are growing slower than the ones started in doors because of the colder weather but warmer weather will hopefully speed things up.

I went to my garden plot today and I was very happy to notice that my tomato seeds had germinated, I planted them 16 days ago. I'm quite happy with the germination speed, not obviously as fast as if I start them on the heated bathroom floor but good enough. The race is on!

Hey guys!

Decided to create an account on the forum just for this topic. Have been reading for a year or so already.

I went out and planted my seedling and seed today in to my raised garden beds and recorded a few videos about it. I will be uploading all the videos to the playlist here:

The tomato I am using is a Siberian tomato which is cold hardy and it was 9C (48F) today when I planted them. Although I really doubt that the tomatoes from the seeds will produce a better plant I am more than willing to be proven wrong with this experiment.
