Denise Ra the windtraps were for harvesting water in the desert they fill huge cisterns similar to the Nabataeans which the fremen were supposedly based on.I live in northern Arizona.Im not sure that this will work in my climate.I am a big fan of dune so thought that this was awesome and wanted to share this idea.hope this answers your questions thank you for taking interest.
