That does look like a pine tree. Sometimes seedlings from the cypress family start out with those pine-like needles, but then show their scaly leaves as soon as they continue to grow. If the new needles continue to look pine-like, then it'll be a pine tree.

Sienna Ranch is an outdoor education facility committed to providing our students with courses that build confidence, instill a close relationship with nature and agriculture, and develop a variety of life skills and wilderness survival skills. This is a part-time, entry level position ideal for someone interested in permaculture design, outdoor education site design, sustainable building, land stewardship, or agriculture.


SCHEDULE SUMMARY
Position: Permanent
Start Date: November 17st, 2014
Approximate Schedule: Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 20 hours per week; schedule will be negotiable after 1st month

This position will answer to the Facilities Director.  


QUALIFICATIONS
Passionate commitment to sustainable building practices and design. Knowledge of permaculture design principles not necessary but highly valued.
Ability to receive direction from Facilities Director and request appropriate clarification.
Ability to work on various projects independently or with a crew.
Ability to use (or learn to use) standard power tools including drop mitre saw, table saw, circular saw etc and follow all safety guidelines
Comfortable working around animals, including horses, sheep, goats, alpaca and chickens
Proficient computer skills, including use of email and spreadsheet software
Ability and willingness to perform heavy work in hot, cold, dusty, or wet conditions.
Ability to lift 80lbs
Valid CA drivers license
 
DUTIES
Assist with all building construction and maintenance: carpentry, plumbing, roofing, flooring, electrical, painting.
Build fences and gates, install irrigation lines, maintain gravel/paved driveways and creeks/earthworks.
Dig trenches and post holes by hand and with mechanical assistance.
Landscape maintenance: weedwack and hand pull weeds, prune trees and shrubs, remove hazardous branches, spread mulch and manure, test and repair irrigation systems.
Assist with pest control: maintain fly, rat, and yellowjacket traps, maintain deer fencing/caging, maintain cattle fencing at ranch perimeter.
Maintain manure compost system: move and condense fresh manure as needed; shuffle stall signs accordingly; test, repair, and run manure irrigation; move composted manure to free stall weekly.
Execute all projects using the most student friendly, cost effective, and culturally and ecologically sustainable methods.
Think creatively and develop new skills to use as many salvaged and recycled building materials as possible. 

PREFERED EXPERIENCE
Plumbing, carpentry, or handyman/woman skills.
Horticulture or gardening experience.
Some experience with, or awareness of, the practical design features needed for children’s education facilities.

COMPENSATION
$11-13/hour based upon experience
Additional hours will be available as needed to complete large projects.
