i have lived in the "snow belt" in the hayward wisconsin area for about 10 years, also in williams minesota, (the very top of minnesota), and currently in lake county south dakota (south east part of the state) our first 3 years we lived in a travel trailer completely off grid, using hughes net, satellite internet service. it is a "dry land" area . there was an old un livable house and we harvested rain water with its roof. we burned the maple flooring in a surplus M1950 extreme cold weather tent stove, running the pipe out a former vent. was going to put a hoop house over the top and bent the hoops myself, bought a 50x60 billboard tarp but never covered the hoops. the very first big snow we had i rolled out the billboard and propped up the edges with firewood i had cut from dead trees to form a makeshift collection tank. when it started melting i pumped it into a swimming pool (about 2 feet deep) i bought from goodwill for $25, the snow i collected in that one DRIFT filled the pool, and all 8 of our 55 gallon barrels.
there is a book written by a lady from south dakota about growing trees in dry areas. she recommends NOT having any grass within 6 feet of a tree. she experimented for over 20 years to learn just how to do it. ill go to library and see if i can find it to get the name and title.
i bought a wood chipper to chip up the branches of the trees i cut, why waste a nutrient that was extracted from the soil.
i went to college and took agriculture between 2008 and 2015 (part time) (im 65 right now) and was a real thorn in my instructors side! never graduated as i didnt want that worthless piece of paper. to me it was worthless as i had no plans to work a job or run a business!!
in january of 2019 we had a blizzard and i was a stay at home dad to our 9 month old child (my wife is Filipino and 30 years younger than i am) wife had started work just 2 months prior, and was ridding to work at the hospital with the neighbor. i had hurt my back and gotten shots in the emergency room a few days prior and when she got home, i was in a comma! i had gotten a STAPH A infection from the shots. but i got them at 2 different places. so no way to prove just which places (just 2 days apart )gave me the infection . so i spent 3 months in the hospital with LOTS of surgeries!!!
it was truly a life changing event!! so we live in an apartment now, as i had over 1 million in hospital bills, lost the 20 acres in montana but we still have the 1 acre in south dakota.
last winter the snow drifted up to the top of our semi trailer we use for storage, the road was closed until late spring. i have some 4x8 foot frames made of 2x2 lumber and covered with chicken wire a friend gave me. so i built a double fence 8 foot deep and filled it with the limbs from the trees i cut because the wood chipper lost a flail and it took GENERAC 368 DAYS TO GET THE PARTS!!! NEVER EVER BUY A POWERMATE WOOD CHIPPER! the first one the generac engines crankshaft twisted off at the output side of the crank case after just 1 hour of use. the second one lost a flail after about 20 hours of use, took 368 days to get the new parts, and just 1 hour later lost a flail again! took it back to the shop and 2 weeks later he hadnt tore into it yet, so i took it home and removed all the flails and just use the small 3 inch funnel to access the blade!!!
but that fence filled with brush really caught the snow that blew!
