Thanks Bryant.  Love the name of those onions....  :}.  I'm thinking about planting some watermelon seeds on the hugelkultur also and let them meander through the strawberry patch since they will come in after the strawberries are picked.

I had never heard of a hugelkultur before finding permies.com and want to thank Paul for all the wonderful information.  We dropped a tree 4 years ago and I created this hugelkultur in my small backyard garden.  Here are some photos I took today (May 7, 2018) of the strawberry plants that I planted the first year but which took until this year to really take off.  Looking forward to some good eating. Also a photo of the front gate from last year's garden.  I've been gardening for 45 years and am still learning something new every season.  Love these forums.

Yes, this is my first Hugelkultur. I took the plunge and planted some strawberry plants today. Gave them a blessing and a good drink of water so we'll see how it goes. This is so exciting, I can't believe I've been gardening for over 40 years and never heard of this. You're never too old to learn something new, that's for sure.

I just finished creating my hugelkultur using a tree we dropped a month ago. Can I plant strawberries on it this season or should I do a cover crop and wait until next year to plant?
