My husband and I bought this land back in 2014 with the full intention of creating a permaculture non-profit business to help support the local community with fresh food for the poor. However, my husband has developed medical problems that inhibit our ability to pull this off ourselves. We must become urban dwellers so he can be close to the hospital. While this does not change our ability to exercise permaculture principles in our lives, it does mean we have to exercise them elsewhere. We have five beautiful acres in Northwest Oregon, in the Cascade Mountain Range. We are located in the Upper-Nahalem Watershed. We are a pretty isolated community; it takes about an hour to get to Vernonia from Portland.
Our five acres are made up about 4 acres of old hay field and one acre of second-growth Douglas Fir with a scattering of native trees. We have planted additional trees to the property that consist of 1 cherry tree, 1 crab apple tree, 3 apple trees, 10 filberts, 75 Incense Cedars, 75 Grand Firs, 1 Hawthorne, 1 Maple, and 1 Willow. In addition, we have planted 8 blueberry bushes, and 1 Goumi bush and an elderberry tree that is still trying to make it.
We have also about 20 chickens and a gracious space of about a quarter of an acre fenced off for their grazing and a covered area for them to hide from hawks. Our land is consistently visited by deer and elk for those who like to hunt, as well as cougar and coyotes. Bears can theoretically be found around here but I haven't seen any or heard of any sitings since I've lived here.
Right now my husband, my thirteen-year-old daughter, and I live in a 1960's manufactured home on the property. Because it's so old it cannot be listed for sale as a dwelling on the land. That being stated, we live in it quite comfortably. It is connected to city water and has a septic tank. Also located on the property is a well that we had dug that gets 10 gallons of water per minute.
