Hey there Everybody!
My dear hubby and I just moved to a small (2.5 acres) rural place near Gargatha Bay in Virginia. Totally different from our PA mountain home we left behind. We want to establish a really nice permaculture edible landscape including fruits and berries, perennial vegetables, etc. Our land is FLAT, sandy soil, water table is about 12-14" deep. (interested to find my clothesline base pole filled with water, it is 18" out of the ground). The land is surrounded by pines, there are a few ornamental trees that need rid of (old and rotten), and lots of rotting trees in those woods. I am looking into hugelkultur as a good way to use all those downed trees that are next to the open areas, and planning to use the fruit trees for ornamentals, too. Same with blue berries for foundation plants, strawberries for edging plants. . .just plotting it all out is going to take some time. Sure wish there was somebody near me could help with the planning. DH and I are early 60's and both of us have some serious health issues, but we like to be outside, puttering with the plants, playing with the chickens (rescues, all 3 of them), and thinking up new projects to try. I have talked DH into making me a couple of tumbling composters and looking forward to experimenting with that. Worm farming may be something else to try once we are a bit more established.
DH was raised on a traditional small farm, his idea of a small garden is 75' x 150' of rows and rows that all "come on" at the same time for canning and freezing. I want to have something a bit smaller to work with since it is just the two of us
. I like raised bed gardens, especially for herbs, but am intrigued by the spiral herb garden design. We don't have any rocks here, may have to bring some from PA to build it! Anywho, this is an interesting forum and I'm sure there is much to be learned here that will help me and DH in our quest for a greener life.
