I have been active in the sustainability and resilience movements for nearly 30 years, beginning with a degree in Ecological Agriculture from The Evergreen State College. As a Peace Corps volunteer, I taught agriculture at the Instituto Nacional de TecnologĂa Agropecuaria in CaraparĂ, Bolivia. From 2001-2006, I researched sustainable forest management practices in the Chilean forestry industry. I now head a program to estimate the full value of ecosystem services flowing from working lands.

You might try looking at the literature on the Transition Movement, which essentially applies the principles of Permaculture to communities.
