what's the best way to store peach seed that you collect throughout the summer? or should they be immediately planted? Or saved somehow to plant in a bed in fall or spring?

Unfortunately I don’t have any dormant scions. I just bought a few trees a week ago and need to do some initial pruning and shaping them. They are just starting to leaf out, some more than others. That’s why I was thinking since I am going to prune them now it would be cool if I could graft them, but it sounds like that wouldn’t be a good idea.

What do you mean by stooling the rootstock?

Cool thanks! I’ll have to check them out! Have not heard of them.

Where did you order your trees from?

I have been doing a lot of research about grafting and still cant find the answers I'm looking for. I want to buy some rootstock to graft onto, I know that the time to do it is when both the rootstock and cutting are dormant. But what I'm wondering is if you can graft anytime of year? I would like to do it now with cuttings I take of my trees from pruning if that's even possible?

Also second question I was thinking of buying rootstock and planting it to let it grow and then use it for future grafts, Is that possible? what is the best way? Can you take cuttings off the rootstock to root first before grafting or can you only use suckers that come up?

These are pictures of several different trees that I’m positive are all the same species I just don’t know what. All I have is the bark to go on, it looks unique to me kind of scaley looking.

Thank you everyone for all the info, that's very helpful. Yeah I was thinking of starting them in cups then transplanting them in the ground when I decide where to plant them. But it sounds like I should just wait until next spring to start them...

Hey all, I want to start some trees by seed right now, with the idea of planting them in the ground in the fall. Will there be enough time between now and then for the seedlings to be strong enough to survive winter? I'm looking to plant red maple, pin oak, bald cypress... I'm in Michigan 5B.
