Biography
Been interested in Permaculture and gardening for years but only had a small neighborhood backyard garden and some trees.  Just moved to an acre lot in Tucson and have about 1/2 acre to work on transforming.  Hope to post YouTube videos and photos/blogs on my site documenting the process along the way.  Looking to meet like minded people, local and otherwise, who can give advice and even a hand now and then if you are interested.

I don’t know why I didn’t mention this in my last post, binaural beats.  I’ve found this to be very effective.  There are lots out there for different purposes.  Here’s an 1.5 hour long one ive found to work for me.

Get yourself some sleep phones and hopefully you’ll finally get some real rest.

Hi Eric,  I don’t know if you’ve found any solutions yet as this seems to be an older thread.  Obviously my heart goes out to you and all those who suffer with sleep issues.  I do as well but not to the extremes I’ve read here.

I suffered from chronic fatigue for 13 years before finally getting the right help so I’ve been on a significant health journey as well. Over that time I’ve learned a lot and come across a lot of different things.

I will briefly offer a few things that I’m not sure I saw in any other posts...

GHB, aka the date rape drug.  Illegal in the US of course, but in some European countries I believe it is prescribed.  I heard an interview with a dr one time that it’s the best sleep medicine that actually works and doesn’t have side effects when used properly.

Ayahuasca.  Reset the brain.  The best interviews I found on this were on Bulletproof Radio, know known as the Human Upgrade.

Physical therapy that specifically targets neurological disfunction.  I don’t know how it works but I’ve been to one where all you do is lie down on the table, they do their thing and sometimes it leaves you so relaxed you fall asleep.  I’ve heard many people with PTSD have benefited from these techniques.  The place I went to was in Tucson AZ.  Halili PT.

Lastly, a functional medicine dr.  Daniel Aman may have been mentioned.  He does a  lot of brain work.  But also a dr who will look at allergy testing.  Sounds weird right?  I ended up being allergic to corn, tapioca, celery, watermelon, apples and a whole host of other things.  Not saying this is your problem, but it could be one more hidden thing your body has to deal with that adds stress and inflammation.

I have more, but I’ll leave it at that for now.  If any of this intrigues you and you want to know more let me know.  I can do more homework and go into more specifics later.

Best of luck.

I love this thread, because...I’ve had it in my head to use a rocket mass heater in 2 ways.  One of the ways is to heat our swimming pool or at least the attached spa.  Then I can throw a valve and with the loads of 2 inch pipe left by the previous owner, run it underground in a high tunnel to grow peppers and tomatoes in the winter here in AZ.

I’m light on the knowledge of pressure, temperature etc to get into it just yet, but with the community help, maybe I can tackle it this Fall.

I live in southern AZ and deal with the same issue.  I don’t rent but one thing I found at my last place(raised beds but sunken below grade).  Maybe you can dig out the paths a bit, lay down a bunch of mulch.  Whatever you have.  I used Woodchips.  When it rained the area filled up, the beds drained but the Woodchips soaked it all up.  I also grew sweet potatoes.  Though I didn’t get much in the way of potatoes because I didn’t irrigate enough, the vines were everywhere and did a great job of shading the ground as a ground cover and I let them trellis up 4x8 remesh fixed to emt conduit frames.  I also had it on drip and would irrigate for 5 mins every 2 hours or so during the heat of the day just to keep the soil moist.
I wondered this myself, but then I think most people outside of Permaculture don't even know who Mark Shepard is.  Then there are all the farm subsidies those large corn and soybean producers get.  Change is slow and it takes a generation or two for things to really take off.  It's a rare farmer in his 50's whose going to change the way he does things at this point.  Unless that farmer has a 20 or 30 something kid whose also into permaculture, it's not likely to happen.  We are on the "inside" of permaculture looking out and wondering why everyone can't see what we see.  But everyone else is on the "outside" doing the conventional thing.  Sure we "insiders" think this is great and can see the velocity of change increasing, but if you remove yourself from that "inside" perspective and look at it from the outsiders viewpoint, change is not all that rapid.

I used to live on the other side of a freeway from a large scale corn/cotton/hay operation and everyday on my way home from work I'd see a young kid driving a huge tractor discing/plowing etc  the fields and would think to myself how much I wish I could teach this kid and his family a different way.  It would break my heart to see all that bare ground, fallow fields, tillage, planes spraying chemicals etc.
