This is also my experience in western Sullivan County, NY. We see bears and bear sign with some frequency, compost is away from the house, and we’ve never had any real problems except once, and it was my fault—I buried some seafood scraps under the site of a new compost pile, about two feet deep, and a juvenile black bear was there to dig it up within hours. Lesson learned—I ran him off, we improved our practices, and haven’t been bothered since.
