We get free mulch from a tree service and use it for everything.... A very thick and wide ring around fruit trees (a foot deep.and 5' wide) but like a doughnut so that the mulch doesn't touch the trunk. And you can plant some companion plants in and around too... Many ground covers will act as a mulch and give nutrients too! I'm thinking of groundnut and comfrey, but others will have more ideas!

I really like merrell sandals for women, they are the comfiest ive found and allow the toes to be spread, not scrunched. And they last a good long time (3 or 4 years of wearing everyday except 3 winter months)

My husband makes his own sandals using conveyor belt fabric (grippy for the bottom) and nylon rope... They arent flip flops because they go around the ankle too, but they are next to being barefooted with minimal protection!
Good luck!

I have been wondering about this exact topic, as we are building a small homestead in the Ozarks.... And I learned a lot from this thread! We normally like to feed food scraps to our chickens in an open compost area, but now that we will be technically in bear country I have been wondering if we'd be able to continue that practice.  We do have a dog, and I'm thinking that as long as we place the scraps early in the day to let the chickens have their pick and then rake up whats left to put in a covered compost bin (with lots of mint tea!) maybe we'll be ok! I don't think bears are spotted very often in our neck of the woods but I do want to be conscious and build in good habits!

I just harvested my first batch of potatoes yesterday! The plants above ground had white mold on the stems so I thought it best to remove the plants and go ahead and harvest early... For having planted only 8 old inedible potatoes, I am happy with this meager early harvest!
Is this type of path something that you would 'mow' or cut back to keep short or keep the tall-ies out of the path?  I'm also wondering about how to best utilize the edges of this walkway? I guess nature would probably do that on her own!

This makes me think of the things that are already growing in the forests in my area (Missouri) like Nettles which makes an incredibly nourishing bright green herbal tea... Spring things like chickweed and cleaners... Summer things like wild bergamot... Solomons seal is abundant in our woods, but used more topically rather than as a tea. Motherwort I have found growing wild in the woods too. Comfrey is a good one for planting in your grown food forest, it covers alot of ground and is a nitrogen fixer and good useful medicinal!
Gosh theres more but I can't think of them right now! Loving this thread, thanks!
