Shai Lee,
I am here in VT suffering from the heavy hand of this so-called "green state" too. Live super simple, under 5 gallons water/day, DIY composting toilets, permaculture gardens, planted fruit trees and berries, rewilding, ...
The real estate agent that sold us the land, knowing full well our intention AND misrepresenting there was already a septic system in place, turned us in when she got busted for something related to one her nearby properties septic. She was clear about not wanting poor people., "hobos", and "radicals" around. (For her, my middle name is now Karma and as soon as I find a place to live again, will spend some part of my joy putting her out of business.)
So after 3 years of making this our forever home we have to sell. We are looking to see if there is anything affordable in Vermont, but Maine has a sensible set of laws for small footprint, environmentally conscious permie types. Vermont does not want us here. High-tech, upper middle class "environmentalists" are preferred (need I also say that means VERY WHITE).
Good luck!
