I am former park ranger and still lover of the great outdoors and forests. Life has a way of directing you to what is most important.  Not just for you but for the benefit of another.  I am discovering that with more clarity each day.

I am torn between our immediate needs and those needs that will be growing in the next year.

Background:  18 to 23 heavily wooded acreas with only up to 5 acres being flat and open.

Is it still the rule to own a Dexter cow for single family dair needs or would it be better to get a Jersey for what we will need a year from now?  Is there any advantages between the two?

Why not invent your own sawbuck?
We have a few different versions of timber jacks  here on the ranch in NM. I like the way they lift a log for cutting. Could you employ the lift idea in your saw buck design? I'm also thinking of the "log dogs" on a saw mill that lift the log onto the track. I don't know if you are up for the challenge of doing it in all round logs...  I imagine some pivot points, lever action...  Viola, log up at good cutting height.
Just working my imagination

Brilliant idea.  I can see myself creating a half moon-shaped pivot point with a metal base.  Thanks for the thinking pills!

I'd use it as a block and tackle for harvesting timber on the property.   I'd put a solar solution up on top and hook up an ATV wench to be used as a yarder.
So, I had this theory in my tiny brain four years ago with my 1-1-4 formula.  Keep reading.

At my age I decided to go raised bed veggie farming.   I do not regret it one bit.

Gardening gives me time with God.  It also gives me time to either empty my thoughts or focus on things that are of interest to farming.    This is one of those ideas that proven to be monstrously amazing.

I use G&B Organic Raised Bed Garden Soil in 3 cubic foot bags.  They go one sale here in Southern Oregon in February so when you buy 3 bags you get one bag free.     So, I try to buy around 30 bags and collect 40.  In addition, I have realized a measurable increase in quality and size of veggies when I included a 4 to 1 soil to rice hull mix.  That is 1 bag of rice hulls to every 4 bags of soil.  In this formula I also include 1 lb of red worms whenever I start a new raised bed.  I mix the soil and rice hulls thoroughly before watering the beds and then add the worms just at dusk.    The exchange of organic material and worm castings just does an amazing job; making my veggies really burst with healthy pleasure...Ok, not sure about that but at least they have the appearance of solid health.  The secondary benefit is that the roots can shake off the soil easily.  All of your root vegetables will grow healthier and without blemish especially potatoes.   The rice hulls also do a great job of water retention and aerating; making your soil appear lite and fluffy.

On the downside, you will notice soil compression after the worms do their business and from the normal weather changes and watering so you may want to add additional soil and rice bags after the second year.

Rice hulls can be purchased at any farm store in 3 cubic foot bag for around $8.

You will be amazed to see how easy gardening will be and how easy pulling weeds will be.   There is no weed that can root tough enough to pull.  You can pull weeds with one hand.    Now, go ahead and smile.

Before I settle for a standard mini wood stove for small cabins I wanted to ask you amazing folks if you have heard or seen a ductless mini pellet stove or wood stove?  If you come across one can you please let me know?

I saw this very functional mini wood stove on a Youtube video posted here.  I took stills from the video as you can see.  I still have not found the manufacturer of this.   Anyway, thank you for all of your experiences helping new, old folks here...lol.

I wish your link worked.  Got another source?  I am in the market for homestead gear.  I just bought 18 acres in Tennessee way out in the middle of nowhere!!!   It has a year-round stream and several springs.   I haven't even been to the property yet but am going there in mid October after it closes at the bank.    Homesteading is a ton of work but no one can take your identity away nor what you do for yourself.    Keep encouraging others as I have been doing for others too.  Cheers!
