Thank you for your reply. The idea of an alien seed was a thought. When I seeded them, all I had on my desk were the seeds from that fruit. The seed starting mix is ProMix BX. It is possible that there was some alien seed in it but I think that that is doubtful.

I don't think that the morphology of the cotyledons is that much different than the seedlings of the same test and those of the test to the left. What I really wanted to know from experienced growers is that the spikey leaves are not common. Since you say that they are not common, I am going with the assumption that this is just a sport. I will try to grow it to the fruit stage over the winter. Since I have never grown physalis before, this will be interesting.

I am determining the germination % for some Physalis fruit bought in the market. All the fruit was exported from Columbia. One of the seedlings, in the upper right pot has spikey leaves. I am curious about this. Seeds were taken from two or three large  fruit from each purchase. Are such spikey leaves particular to a specific variety?
