Butternuts, otherwise known as white walnuts tend to grow and produce in southcentral Alaska (Palmer,Eagle River, Anchorage). I've grown American hazelnuts for a few years (until my teenage daughter took a riding mower to them in a fit of angst). They grew well in full sun and in sandy/gravelly soil. Seabuckthorn grows in southcentral AK as do Arctic kiwi vines. I'm experimenting with Amur grapevines right now. Time will tell how that works out (or doesn't).
