Biography
I moved back home almost 2 years ago, which is eastern Oregon, where I bough 88 acres of sagebrush. I have 3 pigs (2 are getting close to the freezer, one is due in about 10 days), 5 hens and one rooster. I am new to homesteading though I grew up in a ranching community. I joined this forum to continue learning about homesteading, especially anything that helps me be more resilient and less destructive to the environment as I raise my critters. I'd like to grow dryland forage for the pigs and chickens. I'm just starting to learn about that.

My advice, as someone told she "couldn't work anymore," small amounts add up so put what you're doing in buckets you can handle and time allotments you can do and be happy when plants don't die and you pick your first pepper, radish, tomato,  whatever..Small amounts of time, small amounts of lifting, small amounts of water carried , add up and the next thing you know, you're eating what you grew. As for weeds, a lot of them are edible.
Look into it. Maybe mother nature is providing for you and you just don't know...yet.

This was exactly what I needed today when I felt frustrated at not getting more done in a day. Thank you.

Hello Missoula,
I lived in Missoula in 1994 during a National Student Exchange program at college and loved the area. I thought I might move back someday. Instead, I moved back home almost 2 years ago, which is eastern Oregon, where I bough 88 acres of sagebrush. I got excited when I saw your post because Missoula has a similar climate, dry (but maybe a few more trees) and thought we could learn from each other. I'd like to grow some dryland crops to feed my pigs or at least decrease feed I buy. Right now I have 1 Mama Pig who is due in about 10 days and 2 "babies" born in August. I'm about to  get 2 more gilts who will be ready to breed in April or May. My idea is to raise pasture pigs and chickens to improve soil and vegetation variety here.
