I used to live on a farm that had been in the family for over 200 years. My dad and I replaced a fenceline that his grandfather put in to replace the original his grandfather put in. The locust post were finally rotting off at ground level. As dad was pacing off for the new posts, we kept finding the bottoms of the original fenceline posts.
Also about 30 years ago the local city of Winchester VA finished upgrading their water system. They replaced many underground pipes made from hollowed out black locust, still carrying water.
