I read through a few of the posts, but I want to say how awesome quail are. I chose quail because I didn’t want my birds to bring any attention to our yard. The hens are quieter than crickets. I had 17 quail in my garage in the brooder (almost fully grown) and the cricket in there was exponentially louder.

I have a few males. One in particular was quite loud when he crowed. He has since gone to freezer camp. My other males crow much softly and much more melodic- more like the wild birds. Plus most people have no idea what quail look or sound like.

As far as feed goes, I believe my 40lb bag of feed lasts at least a month for 23 quail— maybe longer.  They’re much more bang for you buck as far as feed goes, imo. While their eggs are 1/3 the size, you can keep 3 times as many quail in a tiny space, roughly 1sqft per bird, but mine like to be all up on each other anyway.

They’re super easy to dispatch and butcher too. No special equipment needed. Just a sharp pair of scissors.

Can you get a rabbit or 2? I don’t have access to large animal manure and I’ve read rabbit manure is one of the best since it’s a cold manure and doesn’t need to be composted. I built a couple tractors and propped them up on cinderblocks over my mounded beds. They’re create SO. MUCH. MANURE for such a small animal! They’re cute and fun to be around, so I see their feed costs as a budgeted item for building compost/soil.

Good evening!!!

I’m heading into my second year gardening, but new to permaculture. I’d love ANY guidance with a rough idea to my yard; as well as any resources to help me on my journey as well.

I’m in zone 7b in Georgia. My back yard is south facing and about 1/4-1/3 an acre. There is a significant slope from the east to the west. I’m leveling it with wood chips, but I’m open to sculpting it if necessary.

My yard is currently very shaded, but I’m hoping to cut all the trees down in my yard to make room for edible trees— they’re currently sweet gum and pines for the most part. It also gets pretty shaded from the large trees in the neighbors’ yards.

I’ve got quail and rabbits; I can have chickens. I may get some this spring if I can build a coop and run by then.

I really want to I corporate lots of fruit and nut trees. My dream is for my kids to be able go eat out of my back yard as much as possible!!!
