After 18 years of dreaming I have been given an opportunity to fulfill that dream. I work at a small community landfill which has been turned into a transfer station. The problem was that they had not prepared for the disposal the green waste. I suggested we could take the desert area below and make Hugelkultur beds to turn sand into soil. They supported my excitement and I have been afforded the financial backing to turn 20 acres of land that has only been cactus and sagebrush. We get snow and wind and very little rainfall. I have a state of the art grinder/ mulcher for the greens that arrive as well as the large amount of deadwood that comes in by the truck loads. Below my given land is a river that is lined with old cottonwood trees, Russian Olive trees, and random pine trees. I plan to build the beds deep with the tops being only inches above ground level. Then vegetable seeds planted as well as flowering plants m, all of which can be given back to feed the community. The local seniors have been ask to give canning and preserving classes. A walking Labrynrh is planned with any plants that seem to due well as a drawing card for the community. The road in will be planted with Sunflowers and classes offered to the total use to include flute making. I am planning for tree perimeters as well as trees to be replanted in the community. There is so much more but this is the basics. Turning Green Waste around to teach the belief the Green Waste is Wasted greens is the goal long term.
