Hello gang! New to growing Rubus species, so a lot of questions came up this season. One of them is about the pruning time of all Rubus varieties.

All that I planted last year grew new primocanes that grew ridiculously well. Raspberries up to 3 meters, blackberries over 4 meters long. All of a sudden my garden has become a total jungle. I got a huge itch to shorten these massive primocanes to manageable size, the size that is recommended for easy harvesting at up to 1 meter, so that it bears a bushy habit next year with floricanes that are easily reachable and the plant does not drupe too much under its own weight. BUT, I read everywhere that pruning is to happen in late winter/early spring, which I do understand, but my question is: Why can't it be done in middle of summer on the primocanes, so that I don't have a massive jungle to eradicate come spring?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Hi folks,

some questions about a Loganberry bush I planted last year. This year it started growing profusely, growing primocanes that must be coming close to 4 meters. It is still growing fine as of today's post. This makes me assume it is healthy, but at the same time, when berries started ripening in July, I noticed that they were all dried up with only very few of the globules on the berry ripening, with the others being all dried up. At first I thought it might be a pollinator issue, but then all my other fruits around it did fantastically, which made me think it might be a disease/virus/bacteria.

Unfortunately I did not make photos at the time of berry ripening, but I do have photos of the bush and its leaves. All other Loganberry photos I have looked at online, the leaves are entirely different. Mine are very warty and curled, but besides that look healthy.

Am I just being paranoid? What might have caused the berries to fail? Are the leaves just different because the Loganberry I bought in Russia is a bit different from the forms supplied in EU/US? Of course, I will wait for next year's season to find out for sure, but the suspense is killing me and I was eager to hear other's opinions.

Cheers everyone!

P.S. On the last photo you can see the very different appearance of the Loganberry leaves vs. its neighbouring Navaho Blackberry

Hello everyone, first time posting on Permies.

Last year I planted all kinds of different Rubus varieties: Raspberry, Loganberry, Tayberry, Blackberry. Some are doing great and others not so. I decided to ask my specific questions in separate threads for clarity.

My question is about a raspberry plant that last year showed no symptoms, but this year, despite doing immensely well (canes reaching for the sky 2.5 meters+), they started discolouring maybe somewhere in mid-August, at least that's when I first noticed the discolouration.

My search led me to believe that this is RLBV (raspberry leaf blotch virus) and I would like to have some confirmation on this from my fellow permaculturalists. As well as ask if this means the plant needs to be removed entirely, so that it does not spread to other nearby members of the Genus?

I am hesitant to remove it, since the canes look healthy and shoots are still growing and new shoots are still popping up. Part of me wants to leave them and see if they produce next year and judge by next year's performance and leaf aesthetics whether I should remove them or not.

Any advice and comments are very welcome.

Thanks!
