I joined WWOOF as a host because I feel an obligation to teach the next generation what I have learned from 50 years of practicing regenerative agriculture and organic orcharding. If not those of us who are experienced farmers, then who will help prepare the organic farmers of the near future? With teaching as my primary focus, serving as a WWOOF host has been rewarding for us at Rockbridge Cider Vinegar. We accept only those applicants who have an interest in organic farming or homesteading. Perhaps that is why we’ve had positive experiences with our volunteers. We’ve been hosting on WWOOF and HELPX since 2017 and we’ve met some extraordinary volunteers. They’ve learned from us, and we’ve learned from them. We offer a somewhat unique opportunity for our volunteers - learning about orcharding and apple cider vinegar brewing. We have many friends who farm in our area and taking them on a tour of other farms has also been valuable for exposure to other organic and biodynamic farming practices. In fact, some of my past volunteers now work full time on some of these area farms! Anyway, long live WWOOFing!
