I just came across this thread because i found 3 in-line fans that were installed vertically and all had broken the same way. The fan had broken off the PLASTIC housing it was screwed to. The force of the fan pushing down plus the weight of it was too much.
If you do install it the wrong way and it does cause a fire you would not be covered by insurance.
