Perhaps inappropriate for this post but, is there a way to clone the clipped ends? I’d just really love to save these trees. Same goes for the roots still in the ground — will they still try to grow? More importantly, of course protecting from further rabbit damage, is there anything I can to encourage development in the various pieces of plants I have now? 😅

I’ve got the rabbit made cuttings soaking in water. Can this miraculously work in my favor, turning two hazelnut trees into four? 😬

Thanks in advance for any responses.
Thank you. Such a bummer but good to gain the knowledge on the culprit. Years ago I haphazardly threw a persimmon in the ground and it was exactly the same. For the longest I thought I accidentally mowed it, the cut was so perfect!

Anyways, looks like I’m throwing up some chicken wire. Thanks again!
Hey everyone,

New planter here. I recently put some bare root hazelnut trees in the ground that were seemed to be doing great. Woke up this morning to discover two of the three basically snipped in half. I’m just a little baffled. Looks like someone came through with clippers and just snipped them. Pics below.

Anybody know what kind of pest would be responsible? Do certain rodents like to chew small trees? We have lots of squirrels and a mole but that’s about it. Neighborhood stray cats too but I just don’t know would would do it.

Pretty upset right now 😩

Anyways, all help is appreciated.

Thank you, all!

I have a couple of companion plants that I’ve read have a repellent effect on certain insects. There’s garlic that just started sprouting bedded around the apple trees. I have marigold, nasturtium, and dill in the ground nearby that should be sprouting in the coming week. Also, I have fennel seeds going in the ground likely today.

I’m hoping that once a more robust community of plants with beneficial properties takes off, I won’t see pests like this. Again, newbie gardener. No surprise these guys are after the apple trees when there no existing line of defense.

Masanobu Fukuoka is a huge inspiration, so the advice to do nothing is well-heeded. Probably best to watch and understand my land.

Best!
Hey everyone,

New planter here. I recently planted some apple and hazelnut trees (bare roots) that seem to be taking their first steps. Looks like I’m running into my first problem.

There are some tiny bugs concentrating around the small, newly formed green buds on my apple trees. I’m guessing they’re eating my plants.

What are they? Are they bad? And if so, how to I safely, preferably organically get rid of them? Will periodic application of peppermint spray work?

All help appreciated!
Thank you! And yes, I was planning on applying some kind of protection. Some rabbits occasionally but lots of squirrels and a mole come by the yard.

Greetings!

First post from a new planter with probably a dumb question. Mods, please move or delete if not relevant.

Just have a question about what I should expect to see from newly planted trees. Two Honeycrisp, one Granny Smith, and three hazelnut (I’m assuming American).

I just planted about a week and a half ago, 4/28/24. Already, all trees are showing signs of life. I know this is probably a good thing and therefore a stupid question, but as a newbie I want to be certain that what I’m seeing is a good a thing.

Basically, there’s little buds of green sprouting from the nodes. More pronounced on the hazelnuts than the apples. Pics below.

I’ve read that right now, new plantings should be focused on root growth. I guess I just want to know that what I’m seeing isn’t evidence that the trees are overly focused on vegetation?

Edit: these were all bare root.

Any help is appreciated!
