I really appreciate all these answers. I had 2 dogs that were the absolute best dogs on my little farm. The oldest I had for 6 years! Someone dumped a pit out here and has lived in the woods for a little over a year with various neighbors leaving food out for him. Sadly, a goat got her head stuck in the fencing and the pit and my dogs ripped half her face off. She was alive still when she was found. Everything in me wanted to protect my dogs, even after having to put down my sweet sweet nanny. I waited 24 hrs. My dogs went to my neighbors herd and got after them. 6 years, that dog was raised with goats free ranging and never bothered them. It took one time for her to see them as prey. Since you have no goats now, I would strongly suggest that you keep it that way and be sure that your dog's stay on your property. It's heartbreaking to bury a goat that depends on you for safety and just as heartbreaking to bury the killer next to it.
