I live in the Pacific Northwest, where wild blackberries are prolific.
For the first time in 30 years they finally spread into my garden.  I noticed four or five that popped up a few feet apart. Here’s what I did - WITH SUCCESS!   I carefully followed the roots down to what I call the “master root”. (I’m sure there’s a botanical term for it, but whatever.) It was several inches underground. I followed that root out to it’s end, then removed it in two long pieces.  It ran a total of EIGHT YARDS.
This was two years ago, and they have not reappeared.
If you’re stubborn enough to spend the time to take on this challenge at the first sign of them, you can keep blackberries from overtaking your garden.
