Hi everyone,
We’re moving from the UK to Austin, Texas, with our two boys (ages 13 and 11) and plan to homeschool them. We aim to follow the American curriculum since we’ve heard that some U.S. universities might not accept iGCSE qualifications. Both boys are keen on attending university and pursuing careers as doctors, so we want to ensure they’re well-prepared for that path.
I have a lot of questions, but I’ll try to keep them concise:
In the UK, universities require A-levels, and for medical school, top grades (A or higher) are needed in GCSE Maths, Biology, and Physics. I understand that in the U.S., there is something called AP (Advanced Placement). At what age are AP exams typically taken, and where do homeschooled students sit these exams?
I’ve read that some U.S. universities don’t accept homeschooling. Is this true? If so, how can I ensure my sons meet admission requirements?
In the UK, students must take 8 GCSEs, including mandatory subjects like Maths, Science, English, and Religious Studies. How do I find out which subjects are mandatory in the U.S. for eventual university admission, particularly for medical school?
What standardized tests are important for college admissions?
I’m quite concerned about making the right decisions, as I don’t want anything to negatively impact their chances of getting into university. I’d appreciate any advice or guidance to help us navigate this transition.
Thank you so much!
