Definitely not a permie solution, but I really like the hair bands that look like old fashioned spiral phone cord. My hair is cut just below the chin right now. I feel like they work better for controlling shorter hair, and I don't have to wrap them as tight as standard hair elastics.

I second what someone else said about not washing hair too often. Hair that isn't super squeaky clean is easier to control. You want to make sure you're brushing your hair a fair amount to redistribute the oils from the scalp, though.

We don't grow our ingredients yet, but we've made our own dog food for years. We could grow most of the ingredients, we just aren't producing enough volume to feed ourselves yet, let alone the dog. Our dog is only 40 lbs, so it's not too expensive. We make it about once a month and freeze most of it until we need it. Ingredients: some kind of ground meat, brown rice, shredded squash or chopped sweet potatoes, broccoli, peas, carrots, parsley, and a little bit of salt for the iodine.  When she was a puppy we also put in eggs, plus the ground up egg shells for calcium. From time to time we also give her fish for the oils.

Excited to see how this goes! I've grown a bit of cotton, but flax is still on my bucket list.

If you ever happen to be in Northern Ireland, I highly recommend the Irish Linen museum. It takes you through the whole history of linen production, from ancient Egypt through the industrial era. It's not a big museum but the exhibits are well done, and the staff are super knowledgeable and great fun to nerd out with about fiber. It was also the only time I've gotten to see a jacquard loom in action.

R - Sounds like it's better suited to mulching my berry bushes than the vegetable garden since it takes a long time to break down.

Anne - I'd heard of wool pellets but assumed it was something industrial, not something I could do myself. These videos all seem to use special equipment but maybe there's a way to approximate it myself.

Thanks to both!

I'm teaching myself how to process raw wool for spinning, and thats resulted in some waste wool. (Lesson 1: learn to recognize scurf before you buy a raw fleece and scour the whole thing...)

I've read you can use wool as mulch, but since what I have are a lot of fluffy bits rather than a connected fleece, I don't really see how this would work and not just blow away.
Anyone have experience with this?

I've also read you can compost the wool, but I'm just a baby permie with a small amount of compost and I'm worried it would be too much wool.

Thanks!
