10 years later, I have some of the same questions. Except, I’m wondering if there are any old trees at Winters or elsewhere of the Barhi type dates that are eaten fresh (before ripening when they are yellow like an apple). If anyone has heard of someone growing dates to be consumed at this stage anywhere in the San Juaquin Valley or further north like in Winters, I’d be interested to learn about it.
