Hi, I'm Nyambi (YAM-BEE: translates to Forest Child!).
I'm searching for more than a career shift—but a homecoming.
Last January, I returned to Texas to be near family, thinking I’d pursue my culinary dreams here. But after months in professional kitchens, I’ve realized nature is calling me elsewhere—back to the land that shaped me. That’s why I’m seeking a farm or homestead in this region: to put down roots where my people are, and where the soil feels like home.
I was born in Banjul, The Gambia to a family rooted in the land, I was raised among East Texas farmland by my adopted family. Though life took me on detours—earning a journalism degree, working as a news writer, then years of freelance creative work in New York—I always felt the pull of the earth. A volunteer stint on a NYC rooftop garden project became my turning point; it led to farm work in Hawaii, where I tended dragon fruit and helped restore food forests with GROW Externships. There, I learned to live by two truths: love the land deeply, and love the people it feeds. Now I know my purpose isn't in big, fancy kitchens, but in stewardship. I want my hands in the soil, my days measured by seasons, not deadlines. There's no greater honor than leaving this earth knowing my last act was sowing seeds, not consuming them.
I’m seeking a mentor or host within reach of Dallas (or a Greyhound ride away) who shares this reverence for regenerative growing. For the next year—or longer, if the fit is right—I want to pour every ounce of my energy into learning: composting like my Gambian elders taught me, rotating crops with the same precision I used in restaurant prep, and tending animals with the patience I learned in Texas. My culinary discipline means I work clean, fast, and with care; my time in Hawaii proved I thrive living close to the soil. I’m not afraid of predawn starts or calloused hands—in fact, I crave them. This isn’t an experiment; it’s the life I was meant for, just searching for someone to give me a chance, searching for community. I've attached a photo of me in action!
If you’re a homesteader, permaculture project, or small farm needing committed help, let’s talk. I’m available immediately. More than labor, I offer a heart that’s finally all in.
