Cottonwoods destroy gardens. I’ve gardened next to them for over 20 years. It is next to impossible to keep them out. Their roots are shallow and go for water. Annual root wrestling is required to ensure your plants can thrive. If you leave it for a couple years you will be wrist sized roots in your beds and your plants won’t thrive. Although I have discovered that many perennial herbs can still grow in these conditions.
