Earthworks and Rainwater Harvesting Implementation:
Hands On Practicum
July 23th – August 1st 2011 (10 Days)

Water is life. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and implement water harvesting strategies. The course will cover theory and practice of water harvesting & storage from a permaculture perspective including: key strategies for the tropics, calculations for and design of water harvesting systems, earthworks for water harvesting, and water use efficiency. The 10-day course includes approximately 3.5 days of theory and 6.5 days of practical application including swale and pond construction.

In addition participants will be involved in our ongoing project which include biochar and soil building, planting, pest management, and any other daily priorities we encounter in the development of our center. Be ready to get dirty daily!

Permaculture Overview / Key Principles / Theory (3.5 days)
Water Strategies for the Tropics
Whole Property Design – Keyline Principles
Passive Rainwater harvesting
Calculating rainwater harvest potential – roofs & landscape
Wells for water harvest
Earthworks
Survey methods
Earthworks for rainwater harvesting – Swales & ponds
Roof capture & tank storage – first flush systems and tank material options
Water Use Efficiency
Home: Low flow fittings, Greywater re-use
Farm/Garden: Efficient water delivery Drip irrigation, tree tubes etc.
Soil protection – Mulch & shelterbelts

Practicum (6.5 days)

For Participants in our Shamanic Permaculture Course (July 5th -20th): $600

For Non Shamanic Permaculture Participants: $1000

Indigenous Medicine Ceremonies:

Shamanic Permaculture: Healing Our Inner And Outer Landscapes
July 5  - July 20, 2011
The Paititi Institute / 61 km outside of Iquitos, Peru

This 17 day intensive will impart practical tools on how we can live in a sustainable and harmonious relationship with nature while creating a supportive, self-sufficient and nurturing community around us. Weaving together the teachings of permaculture design and the indigenous shamans of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, we will immerse ourselves into a deep exploration of nature and ways we can co-evolve and heal together.

The course will intertwine three main areas of exploration:

•PERMACULTURE CERTIFICATION: Designing sustainable communities in co-creation with nature. Participants will receive a Permaculture Design Certification upon completion of the course.

• NUTRITION & WELLNESS: Exploring the symbiotic relationship between nurturing the land and nurturing our own bodies and spirits. The course will incorporate daily yoga, meditation, chi gong, nutrition and more.

•PLANT MEDICINE & INDIGENOUS SHAMANIC HEALING OF THE AMAZON: An introduction into the magnificent realm of Mother Nature through indigenous initiation rites and sacred healing ceremonies while establishing intercultural bridges for seeing the emergence of awakened consciousness in all beings everywhere.
