Hello there!

I recently went to a live auction where a local university was liquidating some random lab equipment. I happened to get a small collection of Benchmark B1000 Micro-Sterilizers (see image).

Two questions:

1) I've heard that these things can be used to sterilize needles for substrate inoculation (indoor mushroom growing). Is this true?
2) Assuming yes, could anyone else on here use one of these things? I have 5 of them, and really only need one.

Nice!

The B1000 is a mini furnace, by that I mean it heats up what ever metal object that is stuck into the center.

In Biology we use these to sterilize the inoculation loops that we rub onto petri dishes that are filled with a growing medium for: bacteria, fungi or molds.
If by needles you are referring to those of the type that fit onto syringes (hollow), then yes it will work on those too, BUT (yep it is a big butt) if the ferrule that attaches to the actual syringe is plastic, you will need to watch carefully so the heated needle doesn't melt that piece of plastic.
If you are lucky and have a glass syringe with the old, metal ferrule needles (the whole thing can be put in a autoclave for sterilizing) then you have no worries at all.

Can you really tell me that we aren't dealing with suspicious baked goods? And then there is this tiny ad:
