So cool that you guys are going to build a rocket stove.

One of these days I would love to build a insulated solar oven.
Insulated R-70 box filled with salt/sand/brick at 450F
Solar collector for day, insulated cover for night.
In the front you have a insulated door for a cavity to place your pot in.
When working it is suppose to still have a temp of 400F+ even 3 days after no sun light.

I hope you find someone nearby to help build your rocket stove.
I would love to watch as you guys build one too.

Oh my apologies i meant to specify that we want to build a rocket mass heater, not stove.

but i've never seen an insulated solar oven that efficient. would be a game changer for sure. we have a 'sun flair' solar oven and i was a little disappointed, but we do use it in the summer in the greenhouse.

Josh T-Hanson : Welcome to Permies, and a welcome to The permies Rocket Family Threads, you obviously have done your homework, because you Know there is a Difference
between Rocket stoves And Rocket Mass Heaters R.M.H.s ! With over 19,000 members here at Permies you can be sure that there are many fellow members here with widely ,
some would say wildly divergent points of view that want to talk to you about what you want to talk about. you will long remember your 1st few posts here at Permies.com .

Location, location, Location. The best thing you can do is let people know who and where you are, there is a spot to introduce yourself and your building team called-introductions,
We have a '' Northeast Regional '' section to check out, A projects section where you and your build team can post your plans and building progress - unfortunately this section is
under construction - and is under used, but would be a good place to post your plans when you are closer to a building date !

There is also a section on Cob and Adobe, which is a prime ingredient of your build and its basic material characteristics, It won't Burn, It won't Rot, and its Dirt Cheap ! Is the
reason that it is a super affordable way to efficiently AND cheaply heat individual structures of all types!*

A good reason to get your Names and a building date out there where people can see it is you may have a near neighbor with cob or R.M.H. Experience !

A couple of recommendations for you to look over, consider going to Permies.com Sister site richsoil.com and click on Rocket stoves , this will take you to a set of videos
of Rocket Stoves Mass Heaters that were made by professional R.M.H. builders, or directed by them, Not like a lot of the Jreck posted out there in U-tube land !

By now you have heard of 'The Rocket Mass Heater book', Consider going to cobcottage.com to get your PDF Copy $15.ooof Evans' and Jackson's Great book -
'Rocket Mass Heaters' there is STILL no other book in any language with More ' Rocket Stove / Rocket Mass Heater family information ! ( and I don't make a dime )

You could also take a look at ernieanderica.info, clicking on and going to "Consulting and Booking Events'' will get you to a opportunity to click on and go to their D.I.Y.
Site Planning page - one of the best checklists you allow you to plan for your R.M.H. build, as they are on the West Coast, and rarely come East you will have to plan on Not
having their personal help without a plan for 2014 - But, that doesn't sound like what you want any way !

The first bunch of pre-paid Kickstarter / Rocket Mass Heater Videos should be being sent out to those people who have their advance copies paid for, after that, I expect that every
-one will want to take a break before gearing up for the 2nd round. I have heard nothing about a time frame !

For the Craft ! Think like Fire,Flow like a gas, Don't Be the Marshmallow ! As always all comments and questions are solicited and are Welcome BIG AL !

Its that good because it has thermal mass to keep it hot and it is insulated so it does not loose the heat that is added to it.
Thermal mass: sand/salt/brick/combination/etc
Insulation: rock wool, I wonder how thick it would have to be to get to R-70
Insulation: The top of it that allows light in will need a triple layer glass to prevent heat lost by wind, air during the day and at night/rain event it would be covered by the regular insulation.

The top would have to be slant to allow maximum solar input. metal/glass refelctor/Mirrors/Lens will be used to enhance solar capture.

Instead of waiting till 2:30pm to eat with a regular solar cooker ( I dont even know why some people call them solar ovens)
you can put your food in before you go to sleep and presto it is finish by the time you wake you.
