Upstate NY Permaculture Gathering First Time Event to Take Place in Syracuse
The Alchemical Nursery is hosting the 2010 Upstate New York
Permaculture Gathering on Saturday March 13, 2010. The Gathering will take place from 9:30am to 5:00pm at the Gear Factory, 200 South Geddes St, Syracuse, NY. The Gathering is open to the public free of charge, though goodwill donations will be accepted to support the event costs. A fundraising show with musical entertainment, book fair, and food and drink will follow from 5:00pm to 12 midnight at the same location.
This event will bring together teachers, enthusiasts, students, organizations and other interested parties from across Upstate to foster networking, coordination, and learning among people interested in Permaculture. Last year’s Finger Lakes gathering in Ithaca drew over one hundred participants.
Featured presentations will include: "Green Infrastructure for the Health of Onondaga Creek" -
Lindsay Speer, Permaculture Designer and Syracuse Community Organizer; "Introduction to Permaculture" - Andrew Leslie Phillips, Founder of Hancock Permaculture Center; "Financial Permaculture" - Jason Eaton, Financial Advisor at Social
Thread; "Permaculture and Social Justice: Integrated Struggles", Scott Kellogg, Primary Instructor of R.U.S.T. (Radical Urban
Sustainability Training)
The Gathering will integrate many innovative features such as open-space meeting facilitation (attendee directed agenda), a stone soup lunch, and a ‘zine created during the Gathering by the attendees themselves to pass on the knowledge learned at the event. There will also be an “Introduction to Permaculture” session at the beginning of the day for people who are new to the subject and movement and want to learn more about it.
The evenings fundraising show will feature performances from Barley Wine, Colleen Kattau, Black Earth, Utility Life, Celebration of Man, Pilot Lies, and The Magnetic Pull. Music starts at 5:00 pm and suggested donation is $7 at the door. A used book fair will offer many volumes for sale from a variety of topics.
Permaculture is an ecological design system for sustainability in all aspects of human endeavor. It teaches people how build natural homes, grow their own food, restore diminished landscapes and ecosystems, catch rainwater, build communities and much more. In addition to food systems, the philosophy and principles are now being applied to a wide range of fields, including social systems, spiritual practices, and most notably the finance, economics and business fields.
