I didn't know where to put this on my lunch break so here it is.

While I will admit I don't know the full story, what I have seen reminds me a lot of a farmer in Vermont a few years back. This lady was a farmer raising endangered livestock and must have pissed off the wrong people because she had her entire flock of sheep tracked down and euthanized. Then the state was kind enough to foot her with the bill.

I'm supporting her legal battle and I encourage anyone else who would like to see the state have to actually support their decision in court to do the same.

The story: http://www.collective-evolution.com/2014/06/07/cfia-destroys-life-of-innocent-shepherd-by-murdering-her-flock-of-rare-sheep-now-she-faces-up-to-12-years-in-jail/

I'm a fan of acting on solid information, not fear, unlike the government we all face consequences for poor decisions. I'd like to see government held to the same standard. Hopefully this happens and makes farmers in that region a little safer from thoughtless government action.

Two sides to every story:

April 27, 2012: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of scrapie in a quarantined sheep flock in Eastern Ontario. The disease was confirmed in a sheep that recently died on the farm.

CFIA official statement from 2012

Sounds like there was scrapie confirmed in her flock, but she is spinning the story based on the negative test results.

The animals that were ordered destroyed by the CFIA tested negative but the sheep that died on the farm tested positive. Montana Jones carefully parses her words to give the impression that none of her animals have ever tested positive for scrapie (makes for a better fundraising story) but that is disingenuous at best.

It also sounds like it wasn't the disease itself that lead to the action, but the violation of the quarantine order. That's an important distinction to make. I don't know how bad Scrapie is- or if it's worth trying to eradicate- but if you deem it worth eradicating violation of a quarantine is kind of a big deal.

Thanks for setting me straight. As expected, the other side of the story has its legitimacy. My concern was that this was going to be something similar to a story I heard from the NE, U.S. about a flock of sheep being taken and destroyed by the FDA for alleged disease that never existed. I'm glad my concerns were relatively unfounded, I suppose I'm a little to paranoid about government extrajudicial acting.

Good day all, thanks again for the info.

No worries - I always like to dig a bit when I see things like your post. It is too easy to "spin" stories on the internet. "The Man is out to get me and my humble farm/business etc..." is a recurrent theme and often used as a rallying cry to petition or fundraise. I like to make sure of both sides of things - particularly when people are after my money to support their cause!
