This is an opportunity to participate in building a rocket mass heater in a home near Binghamton, New York over the weekend of October 24 - 26, 2014. Participants will gain experience making and using cob, assembling the core and heater mass parts, and discussing the principles of the RMH as applied to this case and in general.

It is not a comprehensive workshop run by professional teachers like Ernie & Erica, though I have experience building pottery kilns using similar techniques and materials. There will be one or two others with some experience in building cob ovens. In light of this I am not charging a fee for the experience; tent space and modest bathroom facilities will be available, and we can arrange meals as decided by participants. Any interested parties please contact me for more details. Total attendance will be limited to 8 to 10 so as not to get too crowded in the workspace.

I have recently built a rocket burner for a cob oven (still in progress, but should be finished by the 24th), and am working on a cast core, for those who desire to see these things in person before building their own.

(The video shows the beginning of the burn before it started to rocket... flames were shooting out of the tops of the ducts within 10-15 minutes.)

How did it go? Did you incorporate some drystacked detail?

Building the foundation for the RMH was more time-consuming than I thought it would be and we couldn't build inside that weekend... but we did do a temporary cobbed-in version in the driveway. It gave several people a first exposure to the concept and actual hands-on experience. I'm still working on putting together elements of the heater, between being away from home a lot and other projects. I'm hoping to get a functioning core and barrel in place before the heating season ends, then do a really nice pair of bells in the spring when I can get to the clay for cob again.

There will be no drystacked stone inside; did you see my rocket cob oven on Donkey's forum?

Whip out those weird instruments of science and probe away! I think it's a tiny ad:
